As educators, we are continually striving to best meet the needs of our students. Often, we try to achieve this through our own continual professional development. We, as teachers, become lifelong learners. I think this continual aspect of learning is important. It keeps us humbled and grounded. By becoming the learner over and over again, we can keep perspective on what it is like to be the student who is asked to master content and understand how our identity may or may not be represented in our learning. Not only is the content of our professional learning an important piece that helps us improve our instructional routines, understand instructional approaches, and overcome obstacles to student achievement, but staying framed in the lens of a learner is equally important. It helps us to be able to have the perspective a learner has as they enter and interact with our instructional environments.
