Effective educational leaders develop and support intellectually rigorous and coherent systems of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to promote each pupil’s academic success and well-being.
The curriculum, instruction, and assessment framework are at the core of this standard. This standard ensures that every student has access to high-quality, meaningful, rigorous instruction that challenges them academically while creating educational experiences that benefit the development of the whole student. In my district, understanding the importance of cultural inclusion in the curriculum is the foundation on which instruction and assessment practices are based. The content of the curriculum must be inclusive and honor cultural teachings while remaining rigorous and authentic. This lens then provides the architecture under which the instructional practices are built and assessment is aligned. The three pieces of curriculum, instruction, and assessment are intertwined in a constant loop of data-driven feedback creating an environment that is continuously refined to foster deep learning opportunities, and strengthens student well-being.
This approach requires leadership to be deeply engaged in the instructional vision and practices. This includes the development of curriculum, instructional delivery methods, and how assessment informs both teaching and learning. It also requires leadership to create structures that support teacher collaboration, professional development, and culturally responsive decision making. Teacher collaboration can happen in PLCs in which assessment helps to analyze and respond to gaps using culturally responsive strategies. This will help improve student engagement and strengthen achievement results.
This standard creates a mindset that drives learning and assessment. It causes us to utilize data not as a measurement but as an understanding to learning. To help evaluate the system and the approach that instructional environments take when considering student need and identity. It helps us frame an understanding of individual student needs and what measures to take to build the greatest opportunity for success. It engineers a foundation on which every decision we make is grounded in a culturally responsive approach to academic and emotional programming.
When understanding the importance of a well-designed curriculum, properly supported instructional practices, and culturally responsive assessments, we craft educational environments that support the whole student. In my district, concentrating this focus on Indigenous identity is the lens in which we frame our curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Housed in our mission statement is the belief that by strengthening student identity we will transform student outcomes. By supporting, honoring and respecting traditional teachings we will uplift and reinforce the educational landscape and experiences of our students to ensure their emotional well-being and academic success which will positively impact their future.

Artifact Introduction : This artifact is a board presentation on the Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Framework as it applies to RTI. This presentation was developed as part of EDG 5130, but also as an actual presentation to the administrative team for my district. I am currently working to revise our MTSS framework and this presentation reflects the changes that I hope to put into place for our district. I believe that this presentation demonstrates a mastery of the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Standard as it blends a strong knowledge of the CIA Framework with the application of these to the MTSS process. It demonstrates a cohesive understanding of how curriculum, instruction, and assessment work together to build understanding and support for every learner.

Feedback: 47/47 Dr.Laurie Pogorzelski – You were effective in offering an overview of the relationship between curriculum, instruction and assessment. Your explanation of RtI was clear and thorough. The Board would likely have a good understanding of this after listening to you. You also talked knowledgeably about how they could support you, as the Director of Instruction, in terms of meeting the needs of all students. Thank you for your work on this!
