Ethics and Professional Norms:

Ethics and Professional Norms:

Effective educational leaders act ethically and according to professional norms to promote each pupil’s academic success and well-being.

In my district, ethics are guided by culturally responsive practice. It centers around making decisions that are student centered and support Indigenous perspectives. This standard guides how I approach leadership. It is a call to lead with integrity, humility, and a deep respect for cultural identity. This approach is imperative to the well-being of our Indigenous learners. By acting in an ethical manner, I ensure that every decision is grounded in a Seven Generations approach and that the policies and systems reflect our shared commitments to equity and generational healing that builds academic excellence and student achievement.

This standard embodies the values that foster trust, safety and belonging. It is deeply rooted in student advocacy. It requires that as a leader, I challenge traditional systems and put into place systems that affirm student identity and promote Indigenous voice. It is about being the kind of leader that not only sets expectations, but models them. We need to ensure that our students feel seen in the content by embedding Indigenous perspective into core curriculum through curricular redesign efforts. Through ethical reflection and integrative practices, we create a district that has culturally responsive practices as its foundational lens. As leaders, we also need to advocate for our educators by ensuring that the professional development schedule is set to build confidence in trauma-informed pedagogy and cultural instructional competence. These behaviors are imperative ethical practices that ensure every student feels seen and valued.

By grounding our leadership in a Seven Generations approach, leadership will be guided by a responsibility and moral clarity that creates a space for reciprocal dialogue, community input, and student voice. The conversations that have shaped our district’s mission will continue in shaping our future. Leading through service to the community I am a part of is an important piece to building trust and ensuring that the district belongs to those who are educated by it. Service leadership requires one to listen deeply, act with compassion, and to prioritize student well-being.

For students, this standard ensures that their learning environments are places where their identity is honored through curriculum integration, school wide cultural events, and supportive instructional practices. For educators, this standard ensures that staff are working in an environment that builds a culture of ongoing learning, instructional support, and the knowledge that leadership decisions are made with transparency and cultural responsiveness at the core.

Ethical leadership is not an abstract idea. The Seven Generations teachings guide us to build visible systems, nurturing relationships, and to pursue sustainable outcomes. By teaching with Seven Generations in mind, we will ensure that every student succeeds not only academically but as a whole person. This kind of leadership invests in the future.
